Provide weekly update on measures to curb economic crisis

The Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi, Yusif Sulemana is demanding that the Finance Minister provide a weekly update to the house on measures being taken by the government to address the economic crisis.

The lawmaker argues that the increase in prices of food items is exacerbating the economic hardship hence the need for urgent action by the government to deal with the concern.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, he expressed concern over the rapid increase in prices of food items, citing the example of a bucket of tomatoes which has risen from GH₵200 to GH₵500 in just one week.

He lamented that the country is in a dire situation and urged the Finance Minister to provide regular updates, similar to the weekly briefings provided by the President during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He further questioned the absence of the Finance Minister and his deputies from Parliament, asking if they were “running away from the hardship.”

“I’m calling on the Minister of Finance to come and give us reasons why today, a bucket of tomato, last week it was about 200 Ghana cedis, today it’s about 500 Ghana cedis and you think we shouldn’t ask a question? The Minister of Finance should make it a point to come here on a weekly basis to update us, just as the president did when there was COVID.”

“We are in a serious situation and so we need the Minister of Finance to come here, now you don’t see the Deputy Minister of Finance, any of them is not around, the Minister himself, are they running away from the hardship? We are in it, we expect that on a weekly basis, some statement, at least to tell Ghanaians that we are doing something and very soon the hardship will end.”
