Tensions Rise as Lawyers Clash Over Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Initiative

A heated exchange unfolded on live TV when Lawyer Martin Kpebu, a key member of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee, clashed with Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, over the controversial anti-corruption initiative. ORAL, launched by President-Elect John Dramani Mahama, aims to recover state assets misappropriated by government officials and prosecute those involved in corruption.

While the initiative has garnered support from many Ghanaians hopeful for change, critics like Assafuah argue that it risks becoming a politically charged weapon aimed at members of the outgoing government. Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on December 26, 2024, Assafuah questioned the credibility of the committee, particularly its handling of the National Service Scheme (NSS) exposé. He expressed concern that the committee was making baseless allegations without due legal process, suggesting it could face defamatory lawsuits in the future. Assafuah also argued that the committee’s actions undermined established state institutions like the Attorney General’s office, EOCO, and the Special Prosecutor.

In contrast, Kpebu defended the committee’s work, stressing that ORAL’s focus was to promote accountability in cases where state institutions had failed. He argued that public figures could be named and shamed based on credible evidence, even without formal convictions, as a means to combat corruption.

The debate became more intense as Assafuah accused the committee of overstepping its authority. Kpebu, however, remained firm in his defense of ORAL’s mission, emphasizing its role in addressing corruption where the state had not acted. The clash underscored the deep divisions over how to tackle corruption within Ghana’s political system.
