The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has declared their confidence in the parliamentary victory of Elikplim Akurugu in the Dome Kwabenya constituency during the 2024 elections, stating that no action by the Electoral Commission (EC) or the New Patriotic Party (NPP) can overturn the results as reported by Ghana Web on Thursday, December 26, 2024.
A statement signed by Benjamin Asante-Nyarko, campaign coordinator for Akurugu, criticized attempts by the EC to initiate a re-collation of results under unclear circumstances.
He emphasized that the December 8 declaration, which confirmed Akurugu as the winner, was lawful and final.
“The EC’s declaration of the results on December 8, 2024, was valid and in accordance with CI 127,” the statement read, accusing the NPP of trying to manipulate the process through their alleged influence over the EC leadership.
The NDC further lambasted Aaron Mike Oquaye Jnr., the NPP’s candidate, for what they described as his inability to connect with voters.
They questioned his credibility, pointing out his losses in key areas, including his own hometown.
The statement also highlighted Akurugu’s commitment to her constituents, noting that she had already conducted a thank-you tour across the constituency and was preparing to open her parliamentary office in Haatso.
The Dome Kwabenya seat is one of two constituencies yet to be officially declared following a controversial re-collation exercise that reversed earlier wins for the NDC in other constituencies.
However, the NDC maintains that any attempt to alter the Dome Kwabenya results would be futile, given the clear mandate given to Akurugu by the voters.
“Dome Kwabenya has chosen change, and that decision must be respected,” the statement concluded.
