Jennifer Lopez’s devoted father gave a surprising take on her divorce from Ben Affleck, during a rare public sighting in LA, DailyMail.com can reveal.
David Lopez, who turns 83 on Sunday, was seen while heading to a sports rehab center near his home in the San Fernando Valley
It was the first time he has been spotted since his daughter called it quits on her fourth marriage.
The former computer technician, who previously served in the Army, arrived in a casual comfy getup, sporting a black zip-up hoodie, graphic tee, track pants, and sneakers.Â
He kept a low profile in an ‘Oscars 95’ cap and dark sunglasses.Â
When asked if he is sad his superstar daughter’s marriage didn’t last, David muttered something under his breath and declined to comment when pressed again.
Intriguingly the 82-year-old, who divorced J.Lo’s mother Guadalupe Lopez in the 1990s after 33 years of marriage, was wearing a ring on his ‘wedding finger’, though there are no confirmed reports that he has re-married in recent times.Â
When asked if he had any tips for a healthy marriage David laughed then replied: ‘No idea.’
J.Lo’s split from Affleck means she has now had four failed marriages. She was wed to waiter Ojani Noa from 1997 to ’97, and to back-up dancer Cris Judd from 2001 to ’03.
Her longest marriage was to singer Marc Anthony from 2004 to 2014.
She originally got engaged to Affleck in 2002 but they split just days before they were due to marry in September 2023. She also got engaged to baseball slugger Alex Rodriguez but their wedding was postponed due to Covid and they split before the pandemic was over.
In 2007 J.Lo confirmed her father was had been involved in Scientology for 20 years, though his current status or involvement with the controversial religion is unconfirmed.Â
The Hollywood superstar, one of three daughters co-raised by parents David and Guadalupe, heaped praise on her dad in a 2016 interview with Hoda Kotb.Â
She said at the time: ‘He really thinks about what I go through. He said to me one time, he goes, “I just want you to know of all the people in the world, there’s one person who just loves you and doesn’t want anything from you. You have that in your life.”‘Â
David is known to generally keep away from the spotlight, but has been seen publicly supporting his famous daughter over the years.Â
Lopez, who is the middle child of three siblings, grew up with sisters Leslie Ann Lopez, 57, and Lynda Lopez, 53, in the Bronx, New York.Â
Early this year, she opened up about the challenges she faced as a child growing up in the Bronx and how it affected her relationship with her parents, in her documentary, The Greatest Love Story Never Told.
J.Lo explained that she suffered from middle child syndrome and did not get enough love, which caused her to turn into a very hard worker so she would get noticed.
‘I wasn’t the oldest and I wasn’t the youngest, I was in the middle,’ she said despondently.Â
She also revealed how it was hard having a ‘narcissistic’ mother who was ‘the life of the party’ and an absentee dad who worked all night and slept all day. He was employed as a computer technician.
Despite her comments, J.Lo has generally expressed having a close bond with both parents, regardless of their challenges.Â
Last year, she shared a sweet snap celebrating her dad on Father’s Day on Instagram, writing: ‘Happy Father’s Day to the best daddy ever!’
More recently, she shared a post thanking her mother Guadalupe RodrÃguez ‘for being there for me always’ on her mom’s 79th birthday.
The gushing post included four photos with her mom, whom she affectionately referred to as ‘The Lupinator,’ for her birthday tribute.
‘Happy birthday mommy!! I love you so very much!! Thank you for being there for me always…,’ she wrote in her caption alongside two white heart emojis and her mom’s nickname in a hashtag.Â
The cover photo in her post was a sweet selfie with the mother-daughter duo showing off their identical smiles.
Lopez previously spoke about how their mother was ‘a young mom’ and had all three girls by age 25.Â
‘She got married when she was 20,’ Lopez said about her mother in a conversation with ET in 2020. ‘She had my sister when she was 21.’
About her childhood, the star recalled: ‘We all grew up together. It was like living with a teenager, to be honest.’
The family birthday celebrations and holiday festivities this month round off a difficult year for Lopez thanks to the divorce after two years of marriage and her name being dragged into the controversy surrounding former lover Diddy.
Pictures resurfaced of her arguing with the rap mogul on the night he is now accused of raping a 13-year-old girl.
