The Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s National Organiser, Joseph Yamin, and others of seeking to interfere with the Bank of Ghana’s bullion bars. The PMMC announced this in a press statement published on Wednesday, December 18th, in response to the incident on Tuesday, December 17th.

According to the statement, the bullion bars are part of the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP). The scheme is an important endeavor for increasing Ghana’s gold reserves and boosting the country’s economy. The PMMC disclosed that the tampering caused a standoff that necessitated the participation of the police.

After several hours, it was decided that the bullion bars would be moved to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command for safekeeping while efforts were made to resolve the situation. The PMMC stated that the disruption also affected a private exporter who is lawfully licensed to export gold. The incident occurred when the exporter’s gold was being prepared for shipment.

The corporation labeled the incident as “unfortunate,” noting that it disrupted authorized operations and caused unnecessary stress. In its statement, the PMMC criticized the occurrence as a “unlawful action” that could harm Ghana’s worldwide reputation in the bullion market. It cautioned that such disruptions damage international gold buyers’ confidence and jeopardize Ghana’s reputation as a reliable partner in the global gold trade.

The corporation asked all stakeholders to take responsible action in order to defend the country’s economic interests and international credibility.

“The Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), which by law acts as The National Assayer, has noted with deep concern an incident that occurred at the National Assay Centre located at the Aviance Cargo Terminal, where a mob led by a gentleman who identified himself as Mr. Jospeh Yammin, the National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) forcibly attempted to seize bullion bars being processed by PMMC for the Central Bank of Ghana.”

“The occurrence occurred on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, between the hours of 16.00 GMT and around 12 midnight.
