Ghana Police Service refused to return my gun after 2021 arrest

Popular Ghanaian rapper Medikal has revealed that he is yet to receive his gun, which was seized by the Ghana Police Service in 2021 following his arrest.

In a recent interview with TV3, he opened up about his arrest for brandishing a firearm and the subsequent challenges he has faced.

Medikal, whose real name is Samuel Adu Frimpong, expressed his frustration over what he described as harsh and unjust treatment by the authorities.

Medikal clarified that he was not displaying the firearm in public but was in his own home when he took a picture of his licensed and registered weapon. He emphasised that he was not firing the weapon or causing any public disturbance.

“It was too harsh. I wasn’t displaying the firearm in public where people saw me. I wasn’t firing any weapon anywhere because, on social media, we saw people shooting online and stuff, but nothing happened,” he said.

Despite this, he was arrested, taken to court, and jailed.

“And then the only thing I kept hearing was an order from above,” he added.

The rapper recounted how, even after the court ruled in his favour and ordered the Ghana police to return his firearm, he has yet to receive it.

“They refused to give it to me. I still don’t have it. It’s been a few years now. It’s mad,” he said.

When asked if he believed the previous government targeted him, Medikal chose not to name anyone specifically but hinted at higher powers being involved.

“There are some names to it, but I just don’t want to name-drop anyone or anything. At the end of the day, they have the power. I’m just a citizen in the country, an obedient one, actually,” he said.

What happened?

Medikal was arrested in October 2021 after posting a video on Snapchat showing himself holding a Ruger 9mm handgun while seated in his car.

The video quickly went viral, and the police arrested him on October 21, 2021.

He was charged and arraigned the following day and subsequently remanded in custody for five days.

Medikal admitted to the offence in his caution statement.
