Franklin Cudjoe, the founder and president of think tank IMANI Africa, has publicly commented on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections. In a revealing interview with Channel 1 TV GH, Cudjoe expressed his awareness of the party’s impending loss but admitted he did not foresee the magnitude of the defeat.
“In his words, Franklin Cudjoe shared, “Somehow I knew that there was going to be a loss on the side of the NPP, but to be frank with you, I didn’t expect it to be such a humiliating defeat.”
Cudjoe reflected on the political climate leading up to the election, noting that Ghanaians have become more politically aware and vigilant, showing their displeasure through their votes. He added, “I was quite happy that at least, Ghanaians are watching you closely, you can misbehave, you can do what you like, you can be tone-deaf, disrespectful, arrogant, and all that, but when the time comes, they will show you that they are not fools.”
Cudjoe explained that his team had conducted their own polls ahead of the election, which indicated a likely loss for the NPP. “When we did the first one, John Dramani Mahama was around 56 percent, and Dr. Bawumia was around 30 percent. But then, we knew he was going to close up, but I never thought it was going to turn out like this,” he said.
Despite his prediction of a loss, Cudjoe expressed surprise at the scale of the defeat, and the consequences it would have for the NPP and its leadership. He went on to say, “Look, it is what it is, it has happened, and I think the politicians are definitely taking notes.”
Cudjoe also criticized President Akufo-Addo’s legacy, calling it “exceedingly terrible” and lamented the lack of governance improvements over the past eight years. “I’m still surprised that my good friend, Nana Akufo-Addo, had left such a terrible legacy,” he stated.
