University of Ghana stadium not managed by UG Sports Directorate – Dr. Luguterah

The Director of Sports and Wellness at the University of Ghana, Dr. Austin Luguterah, has debunked assertions that the University of Ghana Sports Stadium falls under the purview of the institution’s Sports Directorate.

In an interview with Universports, Dr. Luguterah disclosed that a provisional setup has been established, with former Director of Sports for University of Ghana, Dr Bello assuming the role of acting facility manager to ensure a seamless handover between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the institution.

“There’s somebody appointed as acting facility manager in transition so since the ministry hasn’t handed over, the University decided to get someone who will serve as a liaison, between the ministry and the University, so the former director who was seen as someone who was playing as the technical advisor to the minister should act to see to this.So with the rentals and management of the place,I do not know anything about that. We have our own reservations and challenges but that becomes our own”.

According to the UG Director of Sports and Wellness, the University of Ghana’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo is advancing plans to establish a formal administrative framework for the institution’s athletic facilities, with an objective of resolving the existing administrative impasse by the end of February or March.

“Moving forward, it is in the mind of the VC to establish this relationship between us and the University of Ghana Enterprise Limited (UGEL) to see the proper management of the place. But as it is now,it is not under us but rather an acting person, but I can tell you for sure that before the end of the match of February this whole thing will be truncated. The same thing will happen to the University of Ghana Rugby stadium because they think that it is part of the African games activities. Soo whiles we wait for the smooth handing over, activities can go until the thing reverts back to the Vice Chancellor’s idea and plan”- he added

The University of Ghana stadium was commissioned by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia assisted by sports minister Mustafa Ussif and served as one of the venues foe the 13th African Games, which took place in Accra from March 8 to March 23, 2024.

The 11,000-capacity stadium currently serves as the home grounds for several Ghana Premier League clubs, including Accra Hearts of Oak and Legon Cities.
