Sacking Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as Majority Leader was an ‘unmitigated disaster’

MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

As the post-mortem continues on the 2024 elections, ace sports journalist Collins Atta Poku has identified one of the costly mistakes that facilitated the catastrophic defeat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections.

Atta Poku, on Sompa FM, noted that the failure of the NPP to solidify their base in the Ashanti Region is what caused their defeat in the 2024 elections.

Atta Poku mentioned the change in the leadership of Parliament as one of the decisions that sent the NPP to opposition.

He stated that the dismissal of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu caused further disaffection for the party in the Ashanti Region, as he was the only Asante in a key position in government.

“The significance of this current minority is to energize the base and lead the communication of the party. That change in Parliament was an unmitigated disaster. Where was the balance in the leadership? Parliament was for Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, but they took it from him. Afenyo-Markin, as leader of Parliament, has ceded his region,” he said.

Collins Atta Poku is one of many sports personalities who have been very critical of the NPP following their defeat.

On Pure FM, Bright Kankam Boadu also joined the chorus, noting that the NPP lost because their MPs alienated their constituents by acting superior and abandoning their role as public servants.

This perceived arrogance, he suggested, eroded trust and support among voters.

“There are some people who vote for various reasons, but a lot of the MPs, and I’m using my constituency as an example, the people were happy when he lost the primaries,” Boadu said.

“A lot of the MPs became lords and not servants. The very moment you become like that, the people will see you differently,” he added.
