Uphold professionalism and foster peace ahead of 2024 General Elections

As Ghana prepares for its pivotal 2024 General Elections on December 7, the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has issued a clarion call to its members to prioritise professionalism, peace, and ethical journalism during this critical period in the nation’s democratic journey.

In a statement released today, PRINPAG reminded its members of their indispensable role in shaping the narrative and ensuring credible, transparent, and peaceful elections.

The association emphasised that the media is a cornerstone of democracy, tasked with disseminating accurate information and promoting national cohesion.

Key Guidelines for Media Practitioners

The leadership of PRINPAG outlined six key principles for its members to uphold during the election period:

Professional Standards:

Journalists and publishers were urged to verify all information before publication, avoiding sensationalism or unverified claims that could spark unrest.

Promoting Peace: Members were advised to refrain from publishing content that could inflame tensions or incite violence, instead focusing on messages that unify the nation.

Avoiding Partisanship:

PRINPAG emphasised the importance of neutrality, encouraging media practitioners to separate personal political affiliations from their professional responsibilities.

Civic Education:

The association called on members to educate the public on the importance of peaceful participation in the elections and respecting the outcomes.

Ethical Conduct: Journalists were reminded to adhere to the PRINPAG Code of Ethics, as their actions impact the media profession’s reputation.

Personal Security: PRINPAG also underscored the importance of journalists’ safety, urging members to report any threats or attacks to relevant authorities and the association’s leadership.

Commitment to Ethical Journalism

PRINPAG reaffirmed its commitment to supporting free and fair elections in Ghana, warning that members who violate ethical standards or engage in unprofessional behaviour would face sanctions. The association also pledged its support to members, announcing that its secretariat would remain operational throughout the election period to provide assistance as needed.

Media’s Role in Strengthening Democracy

“We commend the efforts of all our members who have worked tirelessly to inform the public in the lead-up to this election,” PRINPAG’s leadership stated. “As the media fraternity, our collective actions can shape history and contribute positively to Ghana’s democratic success.”

The association’s message comes at a critical juncture as tensions heighten ahead of the polls. PRINPAG’s call to action serves as a reminder of the media’s influential role in fostering a peaceful and democratic electoral process.

As Ghanaians head to the polls, the media fraternity’s adherence to professionalism and ethical standards will be pivotal in ensuring a successful election and safeguarding Ghana’s hard-earned peace and stability.
