Police commence investigation into packed buses at Sefwi Asawinso with 88 ‘macho’ men

An investigation has been launched into the interception of two Metro Mass Transit buses packed with 88 people at Benchema in the Western North Region.

According to a police statement on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, the suspects are in police custody assisting with the investigations.

Police preliminary reports indicated that the individuals numbering 88 and traveling in two Metro Mass Transit buses were allegedly recruited by an individual whose name has been provided as Sammy.

The police revealed that the individuals arrested were recruited under the pretense of providing security at polling stations in various constituencies within the Western North Region.

They were brought in from several locations in the Greater Accra Region, including Adenta, Oyarifa, and Madina.

“The Ghana Police Service is investigating some 88 individuals on board two Metro Mass Transit buses intercepted at Benchema near Asawinso in the Western North Region, on Tuesday, 3rd December 2024.

“Preliminary Police investigation revealed that the said individuals were allegedly recruited by one Sammy from various locations in the Greater Accra Region, including Adenta, Oyarifa, and Madina to help provide security at polling stations within some constituencies in the Western North Region,”police report said.

Meanwhile, the police have launched a search for the individual alleged to be responsible for recruiting the arrested persons.

The statement added, “Strenuous efforts are underway to get the said Sammy who allegedly recruited these individuals to assist in the conduct of the investigation.”

The statement follows the interception of the buses by the Member of Parliament for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and a team of policemen near Sefwi Asawinso.

Addressing the incident, Mintah Akandoh clarified that none of the individuals involved are from his constituency, raising concerns about security during these critical times.
