The Ghana Police Service (GPS) is investigating the 88 individuals intercepted at Benchema, near Asawinso in the Western North Region, on Tuesday (3 December).
The group, travelling on two Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses, is believed to have been recruited to provide security at polling stations in the region.
Preliminary police investigations revealed the suspects were allegedly mobilised by a man identified only as “Sammy.”
According to a statement by the GPS, Sammy reportedly recruited the individuals from areas in the Greater Accra Region, including Adenta, Oyarifa, and Madina, with promises of deploying them for election-related security duties.
The arrested individuals are currently in police custody and assisting with investigations.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the elusive recruiter, Sammy, to aid the investigation further.
