Bawumia Unveils E-Gates At KIA

In a significant milestone for Ghana’s digital transformation, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has launched the Digital Border Control System and e-gates at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Accra.

This cutting-edge system, proudly designed, built, and owned by Ghanaians, leverages artificial intelligence, biometrics, and real-time data to facilitate seamless travel experiences.

The e-gates, which can be used by holders of the Ghanacard, enable travelers to swiftly pass through immigration without the need for manual checks.

Additionally, members of the diaspora and foreign visitors can also utilize the e-gates by pre-registering their biometric data and travel credentials.

This innovation is part of Ghana’s efforts to align with global standards in intelligent border control.

By integrating biometric verification and Digital Travel Credential technologies into a single platform, Ghana has positioned itself as a pioneer in this field, surpassing many advanced nations.

The launch of the e-gates at KIA marks a significant step forward in Ghana’s digital transformation journey.

Dr. Bawumia speaking at the ceremony noted, “I am excited that our country has, once again, demonstrated that it is possible to attain global standards through systems designed and built by Ghanaians.”

This achievement is a testament to Ghana’s growing reputation as a hub for digital innovation.

The e-gates system is expected to enhance the travel experience, reduce wait times, and increase efficiency in border control processes.

The introduction of e-gates at KIA is not a new concept, as Dr. Bawumia had previously announced plans to implement this system by the end of 2024.

However, Tuesday’s launch marks a significant milestone in this endeavor, demonstrating Ghana’s commitment to embracing digital innovation and enhancing its global competitiveness.
