Dear People of Ghana,
We, a group of troubled lecturers from the University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale, write to you as citizens deeply concerned by the current state of affairs in our beloved country, Ghana. After careful and critical reflection on the challenges confronting our nation and the direction in which we are headed, we have resolved to publicly declare our support for John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming December 7 elections.
While we acknowledge that the views expressed in this letter do not represent the official position of the entire academic community at UDS, they are perspectives widely shared by a significant number of our colleagues, as gathered through informal discussions and deliberations. We feel a moral obligation to speak out, guided by our commitment to the principles of justice, accountability, and the collective progress of our nation.
It is in this spirit of responsibility and patriotism that we present this letter, urging Ghanaians to reflect on the realities we face and to take a decisive stand for the future of our country. We are compelled to speak out against the injustices, abuse of power, and authoritarian tendencies that have characterised the last eight years under the watchful eyes of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). As intellectuals, we have a moral obligation to hold those in power accountable for their actions and to guide our citizens in making informed decisions at the polls.
We are deeply saddened and outraged that almost eight years after the cruel murder of eight innocent Ghanaians during the 2020 elections, Dr Bawumia has not even bothered to express any sympathies to the affected families, let alone seek justice for the victim and their families. This callous disregard for human life and dignity is a stark reminder of the NPP’s disregard for the welfare and well-being of Ghanaians.
Under the NPP, Ghana has been subjected to a litany of scandals that have drained our national coffers, undermined our institutions, and eroded trust in our democracy. From the PDS scandal to the Agyapa deal, from the botched Ameri deal to the stinking corruption at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), the NPP has consistently demonstrated a brazen disregard for transparency, accountability, and good governance. Dr Bawumia, in particular, has been at the centre of many of these scandals, using his position to enrich himself and his cronies while the masses suffer. His arrogance and disdain for criticism have led to a culture of intimidation and harassment of opposition voices, civil society, and the media.
As we cast our votes on December 7, let us not forget the scandals, the corruption, and the deafening silence of Dr. Bawumia. Let us reject the politics of impunity and corruption and instead choose a government that will prioritize transparency, accountability, and the welfare of all Ghanaians.
Furthermore, the NPP’s authoritarian tendencies have led to a systematic erosion of our democratic institutions, including the judiciary, the Electoral Commission, and the security agencies. The recent assault on the independence of the Auditor-General’s office is a stark reminder of the NPP’s determination to capture the state and consolidate power at all costs.
In contrast, we believe that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Mahama, offer a beacon of hope for our beloved country. John Mahama has a proven track record of commitment to democracy, good governance, and social justice. His leadership style is characterized by humility, empathy, and a willingness to listen to the concerns of the people.
We urge all Ghanaians to reject Dr Bawumia and the NPP’s brand of governance, which has brought our country to its knees. We must reject their politics of division, hatred, and corruption. Instead, we must embrace the NDC’s vision of a Ghana that is just, equitable, and prosperous for all.
As we head to the polls on December 7, we must remember the sacrifices of the eight innocent Ghanaians who lost their lives in the 2020 elections. We must honour their memory by voting for a government that will prioritise their welfare, dignity, and well-being.
Let us use our votes to bring an end to the NPP’s reign of terror and usher in a new era of hope, unity, and progress under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama and the NDC. Let us show Dr Bawumia and the NPP that we will no longer tolerate their abuse of power, corruption, and disrespect for human life.
Together, let us build a Ghana that is worthy of our highest aspirations.
