The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Dome-Kwabenya, Elikplim Akurugu, is optimistic about securing a historic victory for her party in the pending election.
Speaking in an interview with Channel One TV on Monday, December 2, 2024, monitored by GhanaWeb, she emphasised that the NDC is poised to clinch the seat for the first time in two decades.
She acknowledged the support she has received from constituents and urged them to vote decisively for change.
“If you follow elections in Dome-Kwabenya, especially in the NDC, we have a history of changing candidates every election year. This is the first time we have not done that. Sympathy votes play a significant role, and many have told me they will support me this time,” she noted.
The NDC Parliamentary Candidate pointed out the extensive work she and her team have done across the constituency, including Abokobi, Agbogba, Ashongman, Dome East, Taifa South, and Taifa North.
“We have crisscrossed the constituency, and the feedback has been overwhelming. The hard work is evident, and we are confident in the results,” she said.
Her campaign is centered on four thematic areas: inclusive governance, job creation, safety and security, and infrastructure development with a focus on welfare.
She assured constituents that her leadership would bring transformative change.
“For 20 years, we have been in the wilderness. This year, I am bringing you out of it, just as Moses led the Israelites”, she added.
Dome-Kwabenya, one of the largest constituencies in the country, is traditionally considered a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Since 2004, the NPP has won five consecutive elections in the constituency.
This year, however, Elikplim Akurugu faces Mike Oquaye Jnr., the NPP candidate, who is also a first-time contestant.
A former Ghanaian Ambassador to India and CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Oquaye carries the advantage of a political legacy as the son of the constituency’s former two-term MP.
Oquaye has focused on a door-to-door campaign strategy, leveraging the NPP’s stronghold status in the constituency.
Meanwhile, Elikplim has stressed her party’s message of change and inclusivity, making a strong case for an NDC breakthrough at Dome-Kwabenya.
The election promises to be a closely contested race between the two candidates with distinct strategies and visions for the constituency.
