Osman Iddrisu, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, has refuted allegations that the party distributed food to voters during the special voting exercise.
Tensions were high on Monday in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency after the incumbent Member of Parliament and New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Lydia Alhassan, was seen distributing food packs to voters participating in the special voting exercise.
With assistance from her team, the MP handed out food to voters waiting in queues at the Legon Police Station, one of the designated special voting centres in the constituency.
But Iddrisu in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday claimed that the party only gave drinks to its party agents, not voters.
“It is not true. You know we are mature, and we are politicians and definitely when people are working, we must get something for them to eat. We didn’t give it to people who are voting, we gave it to people who are our agents.”
“…There is no food over there…I repeat there was no food over there, it was a drink. It is either a can drink or something,” Iddrisu stated.
He further accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of attempting to disrupt the election process.
Iddrisu emphasised the NPP’s commitment to a peaceful and democratic election, adhering to the rule of law and ensuring that their actions are in line with electoral regulations.
“The NDC people this year want to mar the election but the election that we are holding, our party is a peaceful party, we stand by democracy, everything is by the rule of law.
“We don’t do things as they do. They brought macho men to stand there that nobody should take food to pass anywhere,” he added.
