A very important step towards the December 7, 2024, general elections was taken on Thursday, November 28, 2024, when the presidential candidates in the election signed a peace pact.
All the 12 presidential candidates for the pending election or their representatives signed an agreement to commit to maintaining peace before, during, and after the polls.
Present at the peace pact signing ceremony, which was organised by the National Peace Council, in collaboration with the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG), were the presidential candidates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama; Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP); Dr Hassan Ayariga of the All Peoples Congress (APC); and Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberty Party of Ghana (LPG), among others.
Also present at the event were important stakeholders of the 2024 election, including the Electoral Commissioner Jean Mensa, Inspector General of Police George Akuffo Dampare, and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
A video from the event cited by GhanaWeb showed the moment former President John Dramani Mahama met Chief Justice Torkornoo, whose outfit – the judiciary, has been heavily criticised by the former president in the past.
Mahama could be seen in the video walking towards the Chief Justice at the high table of the event, after exchanging pleasantries with some of the presidential candidates and other attendees.
The Chief Justice, who was also on the high table, could be seen standing up as Mahama approached. Mahama first shook hands with the coordinator of the event, Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann, before moving to exchange pleasantries with Justice Torkornoo.
The head of Ghana’s judiciary and the 4th President of the 4th Republic of Ghana then shook hands for a brief moment.
After that, they both stood for the National Anthem.
