Jomoro (WR) Nov.29, GNA – Two former Members of Parliament in the Jomoro Constituency in the Western Region are bracing to unseat the incumbent Member of Parliament Madam Dorcas Affo-Toffey in the December 7 polls.
Mr Paul Essien of the New Patriotic Party and Madam Samia Nkrumah, both former MPs of the Jomoro constituency, are seeking a comeback to unseat the incumbent to enhance new leadership prowess in the area.
Mr Essien a former Minister and Samia Nkrumah also a former MP and daughter of the first president of Ghana Dr Kwame Nkrumah are both convinced to solve the constituency development shortfalls to bring much development to the area
The Jomoro constituency created in 2004 has a population of 126,576, made of 62,649 males and 63,927 females with 85969 registered voters, 225 polling station and four parliamentary candidates.
The candidates are the incumbent, Dorcas Affo-Toffey of NDC, Paul Essien, NPP candidate, Samia Nkrumah independent Candidate and Nana Blay Miezah contesting on the ticket of the Convention People’ Pary (CPP).
The constituency could be described as a swing seat though the National Democratic congress has dominated.
The Late Lee Ocran of the NDC served from 2004 to 2008 followed by CPP Samia Nkrumah who also lost the seat in 2016 general election to the New Patriotic party Paul Essien who was a deputy Minister of Chieftaincy but lost the seat to Dorca Affo-Toffey of the NDC
Madam Dorcas of the NDC was born on May 4th, 1973, in Tikobo I, a town in Jomoro in the western region. She began her schooling in Bonyere and moved to the Nkroful Agriculture secondary school in 1986.
She furthered her education in the United States of America in the areas of Real Estate, Dental Hygiene, customer service and branding and has a certificate in public relations, marketing and business Administration.
She was elected the Member of parliament for Jomoro in the 2020 polls, where she polled 24,356 votes while the other contender, Paul Essien had 19,889 votes.
Mr Paul Essien was born July 8, 1975, an astute Politician, businessman and philanthropist he has a BSC from the University of Cape Coast, obtained an HND from the Takoradi Polytechnic, A level from Nsein Senior high and O level from the NASS senor High School.
He was the District Sports Chairman from 1998 to 2003 and then a sports and form master from 2008 to 2016
Samia Nkrumah was born on 23rd June 1960, is a politician and former chairperson of the Convention people’s Party.
In the 2008 parliamentary election she won the Jomoro constituency seat on her first attempt to beat Lee Ocran the then NDC incumbent.
She is the daughter of the Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana.
She worked as a banking clerk with the London branch of the Bank of India in 1984, also worked with Al-Ahram as a journalist in 1989.
In 2024 she started working on a coconut factory in Jomoro constituency, an initiative that seeks to make the Jomoro community a Global Hub for coconut processing
Nana Blay Miezah who is a businessman is contesting on the ticket of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and has his Slogan as “Taking power for a better action.”
The Jomoro constituency is in the southwestern part of the western region and borders the Ivory Coast and boasts of a diverse population with various ethnic groups.
The area is rich in natural resources including coconut, coca, rubber and oil palm.
