Dambai Police Command urges media to exercise restraint, sensational reportage

Dambai (O/R), Nov 29, GNA – Superintendent of Police (Supt), Mr Mohammed Tanko, Divisional Police Command of the Krachi East Municipality at Dambai in the Oti region, has cautioned media practitioners against sensational reportage in the lead to the December polls.

They should refrain from reporting sensitive information on December polls.

The Command’s advice was aimed at preventing the spread of misinformation, disinformation and maintaining peace during the upcoming electoral process.

He emphasized that the Police were committed to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment for the elections and media’s cooperation will be vital in achieving this goal.

Mr Tanko explained the importance of responsible reporting during sensitive periods such as elections year, conflicts demand journalists to be aware of potential impact of their reportage on the electoral process and to take steps to minimize harm.

Speaking at public lecture on peace sensitisation organised by Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana at Dambai on the theme: Building our capacity to be peace makers before, after and during 2024 elections, the role of stakeholders, Mr Tanko said the Ghana Police Service had activated measures to ensure the safety and security of citizens.

He said the measures include increased police presence, surveillance, standby officers and many more to take care of 127 polling stations across the constituency.

Supt Tanko explained that exercising restraint in reporting sensitive information, the media can help prevent the spread of misinformation and reduce tension during the elections.

He said as part of the security measures, the Police have increased their presence in the constituency and are working closely with the community to identify and address any potential security concerns.

Mr Tanko has also urged the public to report any suspicious characters to the Police, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in maintaining peace and security.

He spoke about the need for political maturity and cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
