Social media users in Ghana have had a lot to say about the recently constructed Bank of Ghana (BoG) headquarters in Accra.

The structure is reportedly scheduled to be formally put into service in Accra on November 20, 2024.

Public outcry over the $250 million building’s development began earlier this year, especially after the BoG revealed a 10.5 billion cedi loss in 2023. Yusif Suleman, a member of parliament, was among the critics who questioned why the project was permitted to proceed in spite of its financial difficulties.

However, the BoG claimed that the headquarters was necessary for its operations and contended that stopping the project in the middle would have resulted in even bigger financial losses.

Here are some reactions from social media:

Edem Blessings

“The best government in the Fourth Republic: Nana Addo and Bawumia’s NPP government. Comparatively the best. No government has ever gotten everything right, but this one is relatively the best.”

Fred McCarthy

“The building is nice, though. But the question is… is this really necessary at this point in time? What is the total amount of funds spent on this edifice?”

Nii Odartey

“An institution that is constantly losing money prioritizes building a new edifice while citizens are suffering.”

Adomah Afia

“Look at what they are using our taxpayers’ money for, while parents are forced to sit on the streets and beg for their children’s medical bills. God will judge them.”

Nana Kwaku

“What benefit is this to the unemployed youth in the country? Due to incompetent leadership and poor governance, innocent citizens can’t afford to live in peace and harmony. Everything is going off track. This is for mature minds only—no further comments. Indeed, posterity will judge us. Interesting times ahead. I am a citizen, not a spectator.”
