The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) allegations of an imminent plot by a senior ranking member of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General Michael Opoku, to rig the 2024 elections have made it to the top trends on X for Wednesday, November 20, 2024.
The NDC, in a press conference on November 19, 2024, alleged that Brigadier General Michael Opoku has been given explicit orders by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the current NPP government to rig the upcoming general elections in return for further promotions.
According to the NDC, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) has been promised the position of Chief of Defence Staff if he is able to see through the agenda.
He is alleged to have since relocated his family outside the country, among other wild allegations.
“In his current position, Brigadier General Michael Opoku has been mandated by President Akufo-Addo to take charge of a well-crafted scheme designed by the NPP to rig the upcoming general elections, particularly in the Ashanti Region, through ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes, swapping of pink sheets, and other clandestine activities starting with the special voting exercise scheduled for December 2 of this year.
“Having relocated his family to the United Kingdom, Brigadier General Michael Opoku has vowed to do all it takes to carry out his shady election rigging plot in exchange for the position of Chief of Defence Staff in the unlikely event that the NPP wins the 2024 elections,” Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Officer of the NDC, who addressed the conference, stated.
The NDC’s allegations have ignited discussions among Ghanaian netizens, emphasising the seriousness of the claims, with only a few weeks until the elections.
While some believe the allegations may be valid, despite the lack of evidence, others disagree.
A section of netizens have said that the NDC’s claims are diversionary tactics and tricks to deceive Ghanaians, as their defeat appears imminent.
They explained that the NDC allegedly uses the same tactics in every election year, citing how the party made similar allegations against the EC during the 2020 elections.
Other critics have also called on the NDC to provide evidence to back their claims, urging the senior-ranking member of the Ghana Armed Forces to take legal action against the NDC if the allegations prove to be false.

Breaking News: The NPP is shocked and surprised that the NDC has caught and exposed their rigging plan so they are back to their Ashanti bigotry and fake news politics against the NDC to court the sympathy of the gullible ones. pic.twitter.com/xppJ5YGrEi

The Ndc has resorted to bastardising all state institutions. After launching several unsuccessful character assassination attacks at the EC is now doing same to the Ghana Armed Forces. pic.twitter.com/d0tASepVUV

The NDC is known for using this same strategy in the build up to elections.
19/10/19 they alleged NPP had brought in thugs and are being trained at Asutsuare to cause mayhem in the 2020 election.
Exactly 5 years on, same playbook.
I pity their supporters who believe them. pic.twitter.com/fdr85oQAj5

In 2016 when the NDC saw the impending defeat of Mahama, they said NPP is planning with the EC to rig the elections. After Jean Mensah, Brigadier General Michael Opoku is now the cause of their impending defeat. It is obvious the NDC are sensing another defeat. Same old trick! pic.twitter.com/J3HnsYovtW
