Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of the Bawumia Campaign Team, has expressed disappointment with Alan Kyerematen, flagbearer of the Movement for Change, over his criticism of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Kyerematen’s remarks followed Kufuor’s public endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, as the best candidate to lead Ghana in the upcoming 2024 general elections. Kufuor made this appeal during an interaction with journalists on Sunday, November 17.
Speaking on Oyerepa TV the following day, Kyerematen criticized the former president for his endorsement, claiming it had subjected Kufuor to undue vilification and targeting within the political space.
Responding to these comments during an interview on Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV, Nana Akomea described Kyerematen’s stance as unfortunate.
He questioned whether Kyerematen had expected an endorsement from Kufuor, given his decision to leave the NPP.
He reiterated the former president’s right to publicly support his party’s flagbearer, urging political actors to remain focused on issues that matter to Ghanaians.
“It’s sad that Alan Kyerematen feels that way, who did Alan Kyerematen expect Kufuor to support? He Alan? He’s not a member of NPP. Is he a member of the NPP? If Kufuor goes to support Alan Kyerematen, Kufuor has taken himself out of the NPP. I think in the NPP, currently, Kufuor at one point used to be everybody’s boss, including President Akufo-Addo.
“So, Kufuor is like the old lady in the house, like the Akan people will call ‘Abrewatia’ that is how Kufuor is. The Abrewatia in the party you said he should go and endorse you Alan who is not in the party. You didn’t follow him to stay at that party, you left and he should follow you.
“Between Kufuor and Alan who should follow the other? I heard some of the things he said and it made me sad. At the time Kufuor appointed Alan as US Ambassador and Minster of Trade, there were people in the party who could have taken those appointments.”
Nana Akomea described as laughable, the perceived notion that the party is struggling in its stronghold hence Kufuor’s endorsement of Bawumia.
He said Kufuor would have campaigned effectively for the party if he were to be active.
“Isn’t it laughable, Kufuor is not as active as he used to be, I can assure you, if he was active, he would be doing more. Not because of any fear, but because he’s a member of the NPP. And he wants the NPP to succeed and he wants to contribute to that effort. How does anybody read meaning into it?”
