Road crashes and fatalities have seen a significant reduction in the Kumasi metropolis, according to the 2023 Road Safety report by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) and Bloomberg Philanthropies.
According to the report, the number of reported road traffic crashes in Kumasi has dropped by 30 per cent, that is, from 1,550 to 1,085, and the reported road traffic deaths dropped from 134 to 84, a 37 per cent reduction—a significant improvement compared to the findings of the 2022 report.
However, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and cyclists accounted for 87 per cent of the reported fatalities in 2023, with males accounting for 84 per cent of the deaths.
The report also reveals that pedestrians constituted 61 per cent of the reported deaths.
In an interview with the Mayor of KMA, Samuel Pyne, he called for collaborative efforts to further reduce incidents of road crashes and fatalities.
“Even though there are still victims and fatalities, the numbers are dropping continuously, per the report. We are appealing to all the stakeholders, the DVLA, the road safety commission, MTTD, the transport unions, the medical facilities and the ambulance service to come to our aid, and also the media to use their platforms to educate people that yes, we need to be protected.”
“We need to take it into our own hands that as pedestrians we need to be mindful when crossing, avoid plugging headsets in our ears while on the road, and avoid using phones while we are behind the wheel. Should media join forces with us to educate the public on these things, it will help solve the problem at hand,” he stated.
