NPP Greater Accra Chairman urges Ada electorate to change voting pattern

By Opesika Tetteh Puplampu

Ada Foah, Nov. 19, GNA – Mr. Divine Otoo Agorhom, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has appealed to the electorate in the Ada Constituency to change the status quo in the voting pattern in the area in the general elections.

Mr. Agorhom expressed the belief that doing so would put every politician on their toes in developing their constituencies as it would not be business as usual.

He said this during an engagement with about 1000 widows in the constituency, noting that many Members of Parliament (MP) under-perform due to the notion that they would be voted for at all costs due to their political affiliations.

He reminded them that democracy was not to cause separations among Ghanaians, and politics does not mean fighting your opponents, but rather to help Ghanaians to reshape the nation through dialogue instead of a ‘winner takes all’ system or through autocratic rule.

Mr. Agorhom noted that voting for one political party is not a must but a choice, adding that one must vote based on the outcome of their expectations from their previous elections.

According to him, the power to elect a leader solely lies in the hands of the voter.

“And that is why we, the politicians, have been suffering and begging you for your thumb. It shows how powerful you are as a Ghanaian,” Mr. Agorhom explained.

He expressed concern over the “one-way” voting pattern of the electorate in the Ada constituency since 1992.

According to him, the constituents only vote for one political party, which should change in this year’s election.

He asked: “Why are you always paddling one side of the canoe when there is another side that may be better than where you are paddling?

“If you don’t try the two sides, how will you know which side is better? So, if they notice that whether they perform or under-perform, you are going to vote for them, they will always come at the end of four years with slogans, and you will give them the power, and that’s all.”

Mr. Agorhom charged the electorate to consider the good works of the NPP parliamentary candidate for the area, stating that she was already supporting the community.

He added that she is young, intelligent, and has good communication skills that anybody would want to work with.

“Dornukie is your own daughter, sister, and friend who can be a very good asset to the development of the constituency,” he said, and appealed: “Vote for Dornukie Naa Norteye as your parliamentarian and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumiah as president, and you will attest to the fact that the other side of the canoe is better than where you always paddle.”
