Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah, the current Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, has officially withdrawn from the parliamentary race for the December 7 general elections.
This decision comes after a High Court ruling reinstated Joana Gyan Cudjoe as the parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the constituency.
In a press statement dated November 18, 2024, Mr. Kwakye-Ackah explained the reasoning behind his decision.
He initially filed to contest the parliamentary poll as an independent candidate following his disqualification from the NDC’s parliamentary primary earlier this year.
However, the reinstatement of Joana Gyan Cudjoe as the NDC’s candidate has rendered his independent bid unnecessary, he noted.
The legal battle surrounding the Amenfi Central seat began after Mr. Kwakye-Ackah sought to challenge Joana Gyan Cudjoe’s candidacy.
A suit was filed to bar Joana Cudjoe from running under the NDC ticket, but the High Court, Sekondi dismissed the case on November 11, 2024.
In his press release, Mr. Kwakye-Ackah expressed gratitude to NDC party leaders and elders who provided guidance throughout the period.
Below is Mr. Kwakye-Ackah’s full press statement.
PRESS STATEMENT
18TH NOVEMBER, 2024
WITHDRAWAL FROM AMENFI CENTRAL PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION.
I wish to inform the good people of Amenfi Central and the general public of my decision to withdraw my independent candidature from the 2024 Amenfi Central Parliamentary election forthwith.
Pursuant to the decision by the High Court and the Electoral Commission to clear the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for this year’s election, I believe that my reasons for filing to contest the election as an independent candidate are no longer tenable.
I would like to thank the Elders of the party and other leading members of the party for their invaluable counsel that has led to this decision in the supreme interest of the party.
Long live the NDC, long live Amenfi Central, long live Ghana.
