Women must be included in sports facility planning

The running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has raised concerns over the lack of consultation in the construction of astroTurfs across Ghana.

Speaking at a gender empowerment series at Labadi Beach Hotel on Monday, November 18, she stressed the importance of inclusive decision-making processes that consider the diverse needs of the population.

During her address on “Advancing Gender Equality: A National Dialogue on Current Policies and Innovative Measures for Local and National Impact,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted how public infrastructure projects, such as sports facilities, can either promote or hinder gender equality.

The former Education Minister pointed out that the absence of women and girls in the planning of these sports facilities reflects deeper systemic inequalities. She questioned whether their needs, interests, and schedules had been considered during the planning stages.

She concluded by emphasising that infrastructure development should prioritize inclusivity, ensuring that all segments of society, particularly women, benefit equally.

“I see beautiful AstroTurfs dotted all over our country, and I don’t have issues against that, but I ask myself, is gender sensitivity a consideration? I have not seen a single girl on any of those AstroTurfs and I ask why that is the case.

“So even in sports, we are pushing down gender inequality. Were women part of the discussion before they [the AstroTurfs] were built to know what games women would want to play and what time women had for play? As we look into the future, I urge all of us to reflect on the spaces that we create to foster equal opportunities for both genders.”
