According to CitiNewsroom, Ghana’s Parliament remains in a state of suspension following an unresolved impasse between the Majority and Minority groups, which has left critical legislative functions at a standstill. The Majority is now seeking to engage Speaker Alban Bagbin in hopes of resolving the issue and resuming parliamentary activities.
The deadlock, which has been escalating in recent days, came to a head on November 7, when Parliament was indefinitely suspended. Speaker Bagbin had previously expressed dissatisfaction on November 6, citing the Majority’s failure to communicate effectively as a major factor in the deadlock. The suspension was further exacerbated by the Business Committee’s inability to provide a prepared agenda, which is necessary for the smooth operation of parliamentary proceedings.
Attempts by the Majority to call for a recall session to address urgent matters had faltered, primarily due to their absence from the Chamber, leaving parliamentary work stalled and causing frustration among lawmakers and the public.
On November 7, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin confirmed his group’s commitment to resolving the issue, assuring the media that efforts were underway to directly engage with Speaker Bagbin. Afenyo-Markin expressed hope that the Speaker would take necessary steps to facilitate a resolution. However, he also warned that, if talks proved unsuccessful, the Majority would consider legal avenues to ensure that parliamentary procedures were followed.
This ongoing standoff underscores the challenges within Ghana’s parliamentary system, highlighting the importance of effective communication and collaboration between the ruling Majority and the opposition Minority in order to ensure the timely conduct of legislative duties.
