Ghanaian students secure $9.2m in scholarships to study in US

Ghanaian students secured approximately $9.2 million in scholarships across over 680 higher education institutions throughout all 50 states in the U.S., according to a report by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

Additionally, Ghana achieved the 18th position in the global ranking of the top 25 countries that send students to the United States, marking the second consecutive year in this ranking.

The 2024 Open Doors Report indicates that 9,394 Ghanaians pursued their studies in the United States during the 2023-2024 academic year, marking a significant increase of 45.2 per cent and setting a new record. Published yearly by the Institute of International Education (IIE), the Open Doors Report examines the statistics of international students in the United States.

The number of Ghanaians enrolled in graduate degree programs reached 6,337, reflecting a 54 percent rise and positioning Ghana as the ninth largest source of graduate students in the United States worldwide.

In a Facebook post, on November 18, the US Embassy said the United States remains the top destination for international students with over one million (1,126,690) international students in the academic year 2023-2024, which is a 7 per cent increase over the previous year.

The majority of international students study in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields, while math and computer science continue to grow as the leading fields of study for international students.

Through EducationUSA, the U.S. Department of State’s network of education advisers, the U.S. Embassy provides guidance virtually and in-person to qualified individuals on how to successfully apply to U.S. colleges and universities.  Ghana has EducationUSA Advising Centers in Accra and Kumasi.

The newest Advising Center in Osu will be open to the public in late November to make advising services more accessible to prospective students.
