Legendary Ghanaian footballer Anthony Yeboah has disclosed that players selected for the Black Stars are not always chosen based on merit, but rather on influence and financial incentives.

In an interview with Happy Sports, Yeboah shared an interesting experience where he tried to recommend a talented player for the national team.

He claimed that when he approached a Black Stars official about the player, the official demanded money in exchange for considering the recommendation.

“Players are not called up based on merit, but rather on who can pay, and that’s a big problem,” Yeboah stated. “I once recommended a player for the team, but the management member requested money from me, or else the request would not be granted.”

Tony Yeboah, who is known for his legendary contributions to the Black Stars, lamented the current state of the team, attributing some of their recent struggles to mismanagement by officials.

The comments come amidst growing frustration over the Black Stars’ poor performance.

The national football team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Angola.

Ghana now finds itself at the bottom of Group F, with just 3 points from 5 matches, including two losses and three draws.

This marks the first time in 21 years that the Black Stars have failed to qualify for the prestigious tournament.
