The Ghana Police Service, in a statement, described the operation as part of a broader crackdown on organized armed robbery syndicates terrorizing residents of Accra.
“This operation was based on weeks of intelligence gathering. Our teams acted decisively to ensure the safety of the community,” a police spokesperson explained.
Eyewitnesses in Shiashie reported hearing a series of gunshots that lasted several minutes. One resident, Kofi Mensah, shared his account.
“I was in my room when I heard loud bangs. Initially, I thought it was a car backfiring, but when the shots continued, I realized something serious was happening.”
The police disclosed that the suspects were intercepted while allegedly planning another robbery. The three who were killed reportedly engaged officers in a fierce gun battle.
“These individuals were armed and posed an immediate threat to public safety. Unfortunately, the encounter left us with no choice but to use lethal force,” the spokesperson added.
The two suspects who were captured are currently in custody, assisting with investigations. Preliminary reports indicate that the arrested individuals are providing crucial information about their operations and other possible accomplices.
“Justice will be served,” emphasized the police spokesperson. “We will ensure that all those involved are brought to book. The safety and security of the people of Accra remain our top priority.”
Residents of Shiashie expressed a mixture of relief and anxiety after the incident. “We’re grateful for the swift action by the police,” said Ama Nyarko, a trader in the area. “But at the same time, it’s worrying to know such dangerous criminals were operating so close to us.”
As investigations continue, the police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities. “This is a collective effort. Your information could help prevent the next crime,” the statement concluded.
The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the morgue for identification and autopsy, while security in the area has been tightened to restore calm.
