‘We Will Not Sit Idly By’- Nadowli-Kaleo Group Demands Action on Threats Against Speaker Bagbin

The Concerned Youth of Nadowli-Kaleo has accused the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, of failing to address threats made against Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament as reported to Modern Ghana on Friday, November 15, 2024.

In a statement dated November 11, 2024, and signed by convener David Jawara, the group criticized the IGP’s inaction and appealed to the Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery, for intervention.

The group, described as a politically conscious body dedicated to the district’s development, expressed disappointment over what it called the IGP’s neglect in responding to a serious issue involving Bagbin.

According to the group, on October 19, 2024, a petition was submitted to the IGP regarding a viral video in which an individual issued verbal assaults and life-threatening remarks against the Speaker.

“We are aware of how swiftly threats involving members of the executive are addressed by the IGP,” the statement read, referencing previous cases such as the 2020 arrest of Power FM presenter Oheneba Boamah Bennie for threatening the President.

The group raised concerns about possible political bias, suggesting that Bagbin’s affiliation with the opposition might explain the delayed response.

It also highlighted increasing threats against the Speaker since his October 17, 2024, comments about the fate of four MPs following a petition from Hon. Haruna Iddrisu.

“We cannot overlook the contributions of Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin to Ghana’s democracy and his standing both in Africa and globally,” the group emphasized, revealing the Speaker’s 28 years of service to the constituency and his influence in shaping national policies.

The statement urged the Minister of the Interior to step in and called on the IGP to fulfill his constitutional duty of protecting all citizens.

The group vowed to use lawful means to demand the arrest and prosecution of the individual behind the threats and to advocate for better security measures for Bagbin.

In a final show of support, the group reaffirmed their loyalty to the Speaker, stating, “We will not sit idly by while the leader of the legislative arm of government is treated with disdain.”
