Former President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to the Wangara chief in the Ashanti Region took an unexpected turn when tensions erupted between NDC supporters and Asawase Member of Parliament, Muntaka Mubarak. Mahama was there to pay his respects and engage with the Zongo communities, but things quickly went south.
*The Incident*
Supporters of the NDC blocked Muntaka Mubarak from entering the palace, leading to a heated exchange. The situation nearly escalated into a physical confrontation, but senior party figures, including retired Ashanti Regional Police Commander Kofi Boakye, intervened to calm things down.
*Aftermath*
The incident has sparked outrage within the opposition National Democratic Congress. Nasir Gardenboi, the communications director for the NDC in the Asawase Constituency, condemned the disruption as “disgraceful behaviour” that undermines party unity and democratic values ¹. The NDC has called for an investigation by the Ghana Police Service to hold those responsible accountable.
*Consequences*
Those responsible for the incident, specifically Sarki Don Jazzi and Aboabo Rasta, have been warned that their presence at any NDC event in Asawase will be met with fierce resistance. The party’s leadership has stressed that breaches of party unity will not be tolerated.
This incident highlights growing tensions within the NDC as Mahama continues his engagements ahead of the upcoming elections.
