The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has denied media reports that suggests that extremists and jihadists are targeting the 2024 elections.

In a statement issued on November 15, 2024, the NCCE clarified that neither its Chairperson, Kathleen Addy, nor any member of its staff had made such a statement as reported by the Ghanaian Times Newspaper.

The Commission described the report as untrue and insisted it does not align with any claims made by the Newspaper.

“The attention of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has been drawn to a news publication in today’s edition of the Ghanaian Times Newspaper, attributing a statement that borders on national security and the 2024 General Election to the NCCE.

“The Commission dissociates itself from the publication and wishes to state that neither the Chairperson of NCCE, Ms. Kathleen Addy nor any of her staff across the country made that statement,” portions of the statement noted.

The NCCE emphasised that the Ghanaian Times has been formally notified of the misrepresentation and has been asked to publish a rejoinder to rectify the situation.

“The statement is untrue. The general public has been misinformed, and the Commission does not associate with claims by the newspaper. The reporter and the media house’s attention have been drawn to the anomaly and the Commission has demanded a rejoinder from the Ghanaian Times Newspaper to correct the purported statement,” it added.

Pointing out its ongoing efforts to combat misinformation, the NCCE reminded the public of the need for due diligence and fact-checking before disseminating information.

“The Commission urges the public, the media, security agencies and all state actors to treat the publication as misinformation. The Commission over the years has sensitised the public and its stakeholders on misinformation and this is a clear example of what the NCCE has been engaging the general public on. It behooves all to be guided and to fact-check information before sharing or publishing,” it noted.
