The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of Trade Union Congress-Ghana (TUC) has announced a possible strike, citing frustration over the prolonged delay in finalising and implementing the Conditions of Service agreements for members within the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Library Authority (GhLA), Museums and Monuments Board, Public Technical Universities, and Public Universities.
According to TEWU, negotiations for these service conditions have spanned several years without resolution.
The Union in a statement expressed their disappointment over government agencies’ inability to conclude the process despite years of review negotiations.
It also stated that many of its members had anticipated a conclusion by now, yet have faced ongoing delays and bureaucratic setbacks for the past four years.
As the new academic year progresses, TEWU highlighted that its members, particularly those involved in admission processes for first-year students, are operating under increasingly uncertain service conditions.
In view of that, the union warned that its members’ patience is wearing thin and declared that, if the government does not act swiftly, an indefinite strike will commence on November 18, 2024.
TEWU called on stakeholders to take urgent action to resolve these issues, hoping to avoid disruptions in the education sector.
The union emphasised the importance of a timely response from authorities to ensure stability within educational institutions across the country.
