Dela Edem, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, has harshly criticized former President John Agyekum Kufuor following his advice to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to maintain order in the House. Kufuor recently described the rising tensions between Members of Parliament from the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as “embarrassing” and urged Bagbin to demonstrate stronger leadership.
In a recent interview on TV XYZ, Dela Edem called out Kufuor’s comments, describing them as hypocritical and questioning why Kufuor, as a senior statesman, had remained silent on other pressing national issues. According to Edem, Kufuor’s words show a double standard, as he did not offer similar advice when current President Nana Akufo-Addo, also from the NPP, allegedly caused significant harm to Ghanaian businesses.
“Ex-President Kufuor is a hypocritical person. Hypocrisy will kill Ex-President Kufuor because he is using hypocrisy as cream to apply on his skin all the time in his office,” Edem expressed passionately. He further criticized Kufuor for not intervening when President Akufo-Addo’s administration implemented banking reforms that led to the collapse of several indigenous banks, allegedly costing over a million jobs.
“President John Agyekum Kufuor was in this country when President Akufo-Addo borrowed 25 billion just to collapse indigenous banks,” Edem continued. “I was thinking that because Ex-President Kufuor was older and had more experience, he would advise him to stop, but he didn’t. He watched as he collapsed all these businesses, affecting the work of 1.2 million workers.”
Edem also pointed to instances of violence, claiming that during the 2020 elections, eight lives were lost under President Akufo-Addo’s watch without any response from Kufuor. He highlighted incidents like the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, where he alleged that security personnel, allegedly associated with the NPP, committed acts of violence against innocent citizens.
“If you don’t respect yourself, we will also not respect you,” Edem remarked, frustrated by what he sees as selective criticism from the former president. He questioned why Kufuor chose this moment to speak out, despite the numerous issues that, in Edem’s view, demanded his intervention long before tensions in Parliament reached their current level.
