Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, born on September 24, 1957, in Sambo, Upper West Region, is a prominent Ghanaian politician and lawyer.
With a career spanning over three decades, he has held several influential positions, most notably serving as the Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament since 2021.
Bagbin’s journey into politics was inspired by his belief that “law and politics are Siamese twins,” a principle he carried from his academic years.
He completed his education at the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law, later earning an Executive Masters in Governance and Leadership from GIMPA.
According to a report by Yen News, Bagbin’s professional career began in law, working at various legal firms before transitioning into politics.
He became a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 1992 and was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nadowli West, his home constituency. Throughout his tenure, he has been an advocate for parliamentary independence and democratic reform.
Notably, he served as Majority Leader and has held key ministerial roles, including Minister for Health and Minister for Water Resources, Works, and Housing.
In addition to his national roles, Bagbin has been involved in various international parliamentary networks, such as Parliamentarians for Global Action and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
His leadership extends beyond Ghana, having contributed to global discussions on democracy, human rights, and anti-corruption initiatives.
Bagbin is married to Alice Adjua Yornas Bagbin, a Programme Officer at UNICEF Ghana.
Though he has made significant strides in Ghanaian politics, his ambitions to lead the country as president were not realized, with his focus now squarely on enhancing parliamentary practices.
His current leadership aims to modernize Ghana’s legislative body, focusing on tolerance, consensus-building, and improved governance.
