Ghana’s Opposition Leader Mahama Takes Early Lead in Presidential Polls – Africa.com

Recent polls indicate Ghana’s former president, John Dramani Mahama, is leading in the December presidential race, positioning him ahead of Vice-President Muhamudu Bawumia, the ruling New Patriotic Party candidate. Scheduled for December 7, the election includes 13 candidates vying to succeed outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo, who will step down in January after two terms. With Accra battling its worst economic crisis in decades and a recent $30 billion debt default, both of the leading candidates are centering their campaigns on promises of economic recovery and better living conditions. However, the odds are against Bawumia, given the recent global trend of citizens voting out incumbents. Additionally, no political party in Ghana has won more than two consecutive terms, adding further tension to the electoral outcome as the country seeks stability and renewed growth.
