Alarm bells are ringing as another Member of Parliament’s seat is about to be declared vacant amid ongoing tensions within the political landscape. This situation revolves around Adwoa Sarfo, the MP for Dome Kwabenya, who has been absent from Parliament for a significant period.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has initiated a motion to declare her seat vacant. This motion is based on Article 97(1)(c) of the Constitution, which stipulates that an MP must vacate their seat if they are absent without permission for fifteen consecutive sittings. Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the MP for South Dayi and a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has brought attention to this matter.
In a recent interview, Dafeamekpor stated, “As we speak, there’s a pending motion in Parliament again brought by the NPP for Adwoa Sarfo’s seat to be declared vacant.” He explained that this action is part of the NPP’s ongoing efforts to address what they perceive as absenteeism issues among their own members. Dafeamekpor further commented on the implications of this motion, suggesting that it could lead to further complications within Parliament.
The backdrop to this situation is complex. Adwoa Sarfo was previously referred to the Privileges Committee in April 2022 due to her absence from fifteen sittings. The Speaker of Parliament had received petitions regarding her absenteeism and took action based on these complaints. However, the recent ruling by the Supreme Court has added another layer of complexity. The court overturned a previous declaration by Speaker Alban Bagbin that had deemed four seats vacant, including Sarfo’s.
