Accra, Nov 8, GNA – Nana Akosua Sarpong Kumankumah, presidential candidate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has proposed to implement an effective agriculture policy to support Smallholder Farmers when elected on December 7.
The policy known as Agro-sure, will promote agriculture for women and the youth through a robust system where government would purchase all farm produce of small holder Farmers to create ready market.
“That way, the smallholder farmers who are mainly women will have direct and prompt market for their produce, preventing the rot and glut which affects their livelihoods”
The flag bearer who was a keynote speaker at a town hall meeting to mobilize women’s participation in the upcoming elections noted that women’s economic empowerment remained one of her keys focuses when given the nod.
Under the Agro-sure policy, government takes over the marketing of the small holder farmers produce, that way, the farmer would not bear the burden of post-harvest losses.
Nana Sarpong Kumankumah, called on women especially to support her bid since “only women can understand the needs of women and push the gender equality agenda better.”
She commended the passage of the Affirmative Action law and committed to implement fully the demands adding “a CPP government understands affirmative action law better because Dr Kwame Nkrumah did it in 1960”.
The town hall meeting was organised by the Africa Women Leaders Network (AWLN)) in partnership with the Canadian Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) to mobilize women to participate massively in the upcoming elections either as candidates or voters.
Dr Charity Binka, President of AWLN Ghana Chapter said women’s participation and representation in governance was critical to national development and women must lead the campaign.
She said it was high time women supported their fellow women contesting for any position looking beyond their party affiliations to increase women participation and representation in government and all other decision making levels.
Mrs Joana Opare, eminent member of the National Peace Council said conflicts affected women and children more and therefore urged women to promote Peace in their discourses as the elections approached
