Students in Yendi call for peaceful elections

As the December 7 general elections draw near, calls for peace are intensifying across Ghana, with schoolchildren in the Yendi municipality of the Northern Region joining the appeal for a calm and safe election period.

These students are urging politicians to prioritize peace for the sake of children, who are among the most vulnerable during times of unrest.

In a symbolic demonstration of their commitment to peace, students from Ivanmich Primary School in Yendi held a peace march, carrying placards with messages like “Political Violence Affects Children’s Growth and Development,” “Choose Peace, Choose Progress,” and “Dear Politicians, Remember Us; We Are the Future Leaders.” The march culminated with a petition to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), asking him to champion peace as the election approaches.

The petition, delivered to the Municipal Coordinating Director Abdul Razak Yakah on behalf of the MCE, called on local leaders to take proactive measures to ensure a safe environment for all citizens during the election period.

Speaking on behalf of her fellow students, Farida Burhaideen emphasized the risks children face when peace is disrupted and appealed to the MCE to safeguard their future by ensuring a peaceful election season.

Yakah, receiving the petition, expressed his appreciation for the students’ commitment to peace and assured them that their message would be relayed to the MCE. He also shared steps the municipal assembly is taking to maintain peace and order as election day approaches.

Madam Natogmah Mariam, proprietor of Ivanmich Primary School, highlighted the critical importance of peace, underscoring the adverse impacts political unrest has on children and on the nation’s future.

Channel One News spoke to several students who voiced their desire for a peaceful election, reflecting the widespread concern that the absence of peace puts children and other vulnerable groups at significant risk.

As political campaigns intensify and tensions rise, the children of Ivanmich Primary School are calling on politicians to remember the impact of their actions on Ghana’s next generation and urging all citizens to choose peace.
