Accra, Nov.7, GNA- President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has granted Executive Approval for the upgrade of the status of some 15 districts and municipalities across the country.

The approval follows a request by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD) pursuant to relevant legal provisions of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).

A statement from the Ministry, shared with the Ghana News Agency, announced that two Municipal Assemblies—Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly and Techiman Municipal Assembly—have been elevated to Metropolis status.

The Gomoa East District Assembly has also been upgraded to a Metropolis.

In total, twelve other District Assemblies, including Bole District Assembly, Afigya Kwabre South District Assembly, Atwima Kwanwoma District Assembly, Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly, Obuasi East District Assembly, and Sekyere South District Assembly, have been upgraded to Municipalities.

The MLGDRD said the upgrade of the affected Assemblies would be finalised once the necessary legal and administrative processes were completed.

The Ministry said the request to change the Ho Municipality to Metropolis, and the Offinso North and Birim North districts to municipalities, as well as petitions for the creation of new districts were under consideration for necessary action.
