The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has joined the global community in observing the International Day for Biosphere Reserves.
A press statement by the agency indicated that the day serves as a reminder of the vital relationship between human communities and nature, emphasising the need for harmonious coexistence.
The observance is aligned with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, which was launched in 1971 to establish a scientific foundation for enhancing interactions between people and their environment.
The MAB Programme promotes innovative approaches to economic development that are socially, culturally appropriate, and environmentally sustainable.
This year’s celebration underscores the urgent need for sustainable practices that balance environmental preservation with human development.
According to EPA, the goal is to inspire actions that will protect these vital areas for future generations.
As part of the observance, the EPA is set to host the 4th National Forum on Biosphere Reserves and Sustainable Development, themed, “Synergising our Resources through Partnerships to Enhance Biosphere Reserves’ Contribution to the Global Biodiversity Framework.”
The forum is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi.
The event will bring together stakeholders from various sectors, including public and private institutions, academia, traditional authorities, civil society organisations, and media representatives.
