More than 400 staff of the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital at Mampong in the Akuapem North on November 9, held a vigil for their departed colleague Ruth Mamle Nartey.
The late midwife, Ruth Mamle Nartey, was killed by a speeding vehicle on Wednesday, October 30, a few meters away from the hospital’s entrance, on her way home from work.
The aggrieved staff are still threatening to lay down their tools if promises made by the Eastern Regional Minister, Seth Kwame Acheampong for the construction of speed ramps and pedestrian overpasses are not realized.
It was a solemn moment as the staff of the hospital, with red armbands gathered to light up candles to begin the Virgil in memory of their departed colleague.
The vigil which had both clinical and non-clinical staff of the hospital also included senior management of the hospital.
The staff marched from the hospital to the Mampong roundabout and ended the match at the exact spot where the accident occurred.
Prayer sessions were held in her memory and a tree was planted in recognition of her hard work at the unit where she worked.
For the Management of the facility, the death of Ruth Mamle Nartey has been a tragic blow according to the clinical care coordinator Dr Frank Dzifa Kpesenu.
Ruth Mamle Nartey before her demise was championing the establishment of a breast cancer unit for the people of Akuapem North having submitted a proposal to the Municipal Assembly for funds to aid the realization of the centre.
The Eastern Regional Minister on Friday, November 1, visited the hospital during a protest by the staff and promised to pull strings to get their key demands met.
The aggrieved nurses who are still not satisfied say they will mobilize and soon put their operations on hold.
The convenor of the aggrieved staff Joseph Aboagye who doubles as Systems Administrator of the hospital in an interview with Citi News, said, “We cannot say we are satisfied until we see demands met.
But as of now we have seen steps by the highway authority and we understand the markings are for the construction of some speed ramps.
“We are appealing to the government for the tablet ramps and not the small ones because drivers can easily speed on the small strips but the tablet ones will slow them. We won’t rest until the demands are met and if not we will be forced to law down our tools.”
The Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, called for the immediate construction of the speed ramps and pedestrian overpass, warning that they will be forced to lay down their tools if their concerns are not addressed.
Isaac Wugyiti, the Eastern Regional Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, said, “Our demands are simple we can’t be working and at the same time being knocked down by speeding vehicles, we will put our tools down if the government fails to construct the speed ramps in the coming weeks.”
