According to CITI FM today Wednesday, a well-known local chief in the Eastern Region of Ghana met a tragic end when he was attacked by unknown assailants late at night.
The chief, Nii Kwaku Mensah, was reportedly attacked around midnight on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, as he stepped out to use a latrine located in his homestead.
Eastern Region Police Commander, Serwaa Korkor, confirmed the heartbreaking news, revealing that the attackers struck Nii Mensah on the neck, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.
“It is a tragic loss for the community. This was a brutal attack, and we are determined to find those responsible,” Commander Korkor stated.
According to the police, neighbors rushed Nii Mensah to the nearby Suhum Government Hospital after hearing disturbing noises coming from his compound.
Unfortunately, the injuries proved too severe, and the chief was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The police have launched an intensive investigation into the case, with officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) working closely to uncover leads.
Authorities are focused on identifying the attackers and uncovering the motive behind this gruesome murder.
In a community meeting on Sunday morning, a visibly shaken resident, Kwame Boateng, expressed the collective grief and shock felt by the people of the region.
“This is a horrible day for us. Nii Kwaku Mensah was not only a leader but a father figure to us all. We cannot understand why anyone would do this,” he said.
Another resident, Amma Serwaa, added, “We need justice. Nii Mensah was a respected chief who always put the community’s welfare first. We are calling on the police to find whoever did this. We cannot sleep peacefully until justice is served.”
The Eastern Region Police have assured residents that they will do everything possible to bring the culprits to justice.
“We are urging everyone with information to come forward,” Commander Korkor said, emphasizing the importance of community support in the investigation. “We understand how frightened and angry people are, and we are here to ensure justice is served.”
As the chief’s body awaits an autopsy at Suhum Government Hospital, the community remains in mourning. Many gathered at his home, lighting candles and praying for his family.
