“NPP’s Election Campaign Funding Leaves Ghana’s Energy Sector $2 Billion in Debt” – Shamima Muslim

Shamima Muslim, a prominent Ghanaian media figure and member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of driving the country’s energy sector into a state of deep financial crisis.

According to Modern Ghana on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, She claims the government’s focus on funding its 2024 election campaign has left the energy sector drowning in unpaid debts.

In a social media post on November 5, Muslim revealed that the government’s financial mismanagement has resulted in a staggering $2 billion debt in the energy sector.

This includes outstanding payments to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and other key stakeholders in the sector.

Muslim criticized the government’s handling of the situation, asserting that the NPP’s priority is securing electoral victory, not addressing the sector’s dire fiscal problems.

“The NPP is certainly one to throw away the baby with the bath water,” she said, emphasizing the damage caused by neglecting the country’s energy needs for electoral gain.

She further pointed out that the debt crisis has been exacerbated by the government’s lavish spending on its election campaign.

“Imagine owing everyone and still parading your profligacy in their face,” Muslim added, questioning the ethics behind the NPP’s actions.

Muslim also called on the IPPs, contractors, suppliers, and labor involved in the energy sector to speak out about their grievances.

“How do the IPPs, contractors, suppliers, labor etc. feel watching how their monies are being used to execute the NPP’s campaign and individual pockets? Speak out ohh, speak out,” she urged, stressing the need for transparency and accountability.
