Gideon Mensah opens up on failed Barcelona move

Black Stars full-back Gideon Mensah has opened up about his failed transfer to European heavyweights FC Barcelona five years ago.

The potential move to Barcelona fell apart due to a breach of confidentiality. In 2019, while Mensah was still at Salzburg, the young left-back was offered a loan to Barcelona as Jordi Alba’s understudy.

However, news of the deal leaked prematurely, violating the confidentiality agreement.

During an interview with Flashscore, Mensah disclosed that the news leakage caused the transfer to collapse, leaving him devastated as he reflected on the missed opportunity that could have shaped his career.

“I couldn’t resist thinking about the next flight to Spain. The next day, I just saw the news everywhere in Ghana that Barcelona wanted me. So, I called my agent and asked him what happened to not saying anything to anyone. The agent also said he didn’t know how the news got out,” he said.

Gideon Mensah currently plays for French Ligue 1 side AJ Auxerre and has nearly 30 caps for Ghana’s Black Stars at the international level.
