The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has urged all Ghanaians to exercise restraint and uphold the law as the December 7 general elections approach.
In a statement underscoring their commitment to maintaining peace throughout the election period, the police emphasized that while they do not wish to make arrests, they will enforce the law if necessary to ensure order.
At a recent meeting with executives from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ayawaso East and Ayawaso North constituencies, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Arhin Kwasi Annor, the Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, appealed to political leaders to act responsibly and encourage their supporters to comply with legal standards, stressing that peace is essential to a smooth election.
DCOP Annor clarified that the police take no satisfaction in making arrests, aiming to dispel any notion of bias in law enforcement actions. The meeting with NPP and NDC leaders is part of a broader police effort to build cooperation with political stakeholders ahead of election day.
He encouraged party leaders to use their influence to foster respect for the law among their members, noting that a peaceful election benefits not only political parties but the nation as a whole.
“Let’s continue to comport ourselves. We live in a country where there are laws and laws and regulations and it behoves everybody who lives in the country, to respect the laws of the country. If you respect the laws of the country, you will not have any problems with any police officer.
“But then if you decide to do otherwise, that is where the problem will come. And we sitting here, nobody takes delight in punishing people. Nobody can just arrest you when you have not committed any offence. So please, let us comport ourselves. Let’s respect the laws of the country. Let’s act within the confines of the laws of the country.”
