Citi FM/Channel One TV management has handed over a newly constructed market, gender-specific washroom facilities, and a mechanized borehole water system to displaced residents of New Bakpa in the Central Tongu District.
These individuals, affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage by the Volta River Authority last year, continue to face significant challenges in rebuilding their lives.
Funded by donations from Citi FM listeners and Channel One TV viewers, the facilities were completed at a cost of GH₵1.3 million.
Representing Managing Director Samuel Attah-Mensah, Channel One TV’s Head of Administration, Mathew Idun, expressed gratitude to the donors for their generosity and encouraged the victims to stay resilient.
Togbe Sakpiti, Chief of Awadiokome, voiced disappointment over the government’s slow response to the community’s housing needs but praised Citi FM/Channel One TV for stepping in during this difficult period.
“Our profound gratitude to Mr. Samuel Atta-Mensah and his team for not abandoning us in our trying times,” he said.
Gabby Hotorwodze, Member of Parliament for Central Tongu, called for compensation for the victims, noting the deterioration in living conditions caused by the spillage.
District Chief Executive Thomas Zonyra Moore expressed enthusiasm about the new market’s potential to generate revenue for the district, pledging to maintain and expand the facility with funds raised.
“We’re going to maintain the facility and make sure we expand it with the funds generated from it. We’re thankful to the donors for this kind gesture,” he added.
This project in New Bakpa joins several others completed across the region to support recovery efforts following the Akosombo disaster.
