According to the video posted by adomonline today Thursday, during a visit to a New Democratic Congress (NDC) stronghold in the Volta Region, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia faced a challenging reception from a section of the crowd, with chants of “We Want Mahama! We Want Mahama Back!” interrupting his address.
The incident occurred as Dr. Bawumia, who is on a nationwide tour, aimed to engage residents on topics such as development projects, economic issues, and ways to improve living standards in the community.
Initially, Dr. Bawumia addressed the crowd to discuss initiatives related to economic growth, the digitization agenda, and ongoing infrastructure projects meant to benefit various regions across Ghana.
However, as he spoke, a group in the crowd began hooting and chanting in support of former President John Mahama, expressing frustration with the current government’s handling of the economy and local development needs.
While the Vice President’s team continued with the event, the disruptions highlighted a level of discontent among certain residents. Local sources indicated that economic struggles in the area, such as high unemployment rates, rising costs of living, and inflation, could be factors in the crowd’s reaction.
Residents expressed that the prices of fuel and basic goods have surged recently, impacting everyday lives in rural and semi-urban areas like this community.
In addition to economic issues, some residents pointed to infrastructure challenges as a source of frustration. The Volta Region, like other parts of the country, has faced difficulties with limited job opportunities, infrastructure gaps, and a high dependency on agriculture and small businesses, which have been affected by the rising costs of inputs and transportation.
Political analysts suggest that the incident in the Volta Region may pose a challenge for Dr. Bawumia, who is expected to run as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate in the upcoming elections.
Despite the NPP’s focus on modernization and economic stabilization, gaining support in NDC strongholds like the Volta Region remains challenging. The incident underscored the need for the Vice President to address these local concerns more effectively if he is to garner broader support across various regions.
