Veep Bawumia unveils Ghana’s music streaming platform

By Godwill Arthur Mensah

Accra, Nov 1, GNA–Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has launched Ghana’s music streaming platform for Ghanaian music artists and content creators to get adequate compensation for their works.

The platform was created by a group of Ghanaians solely for an exclusive collection of Ghanaian music.

It features every genre from highlife to hiplife, afrobeat and traditional rhythms to help push Ghana’s rich musical legacies and experiences.

Speaking at the launch of the Ghana Music Xperience (GMX), Dr Bawumia said the streaming platform was a historic moment for Ghana to have its own music streaming app.

The unveiling of the Ghana Music Xperience, a Ghanaian-built music streaming platform, would connect Ghanaian music with audiences locally and globally, he stated.

“Over the years, our talented and hardworking musicians have given us joy, comfort and hope through their unique and infectious music.

“However, they are not adequately rewarded. They receive very little from foreign music streaming apps.

“Therefore, to ensure adequate reward and preservation of legacies, require platforms that our artistes, and all those who contribute to this vibrant industry, receive their due recognition, compensation, and rightful place on the global stage,” Dr Bawumia emphasised.

“This is what the Ghana Music Xperience, which is more than just a music streaming app, offers. In the midst of having myriad streaming platforms, having one that is purely dedicated to Ghanaian music and musicians, is a welcome addition to our digitalization journey as a country.

“The vast fan base of every Ghanaian musician is Ghanaian, yet they do not make enough money from this strong fan base at home because of piracy and foreign streaming services, which do not promote and pay them adequately,” he noted.

Dr Bawumia was confident that with the support of all stakeholders, through the patronage of the GMX, the game would now change for Ghanaian musicians and industry players to get their deserved compensation.

“It is my distinct honour and pleasure to formally launch Ghana Music Xperience (GMX), Ghana’s local music streaming app,” the Vice President stated.

Individuals who sign up to the platform can discover many carefully chosen playlists to help them enjoy a unique blend of local music content.

The event was attended by dignitaries and stakeholders from the entertainment industry, including Mr Andrew Egyapa Mercer, the Minister of Tourism, Creative Arts, and Culture, Bessa Simons, the President of MUSIGA and Mr Akwesi Agyeman, the CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority.

Other notable attendees were rapper E.L., Zapp Mallet, Samini, Fred Kyei Mensah, and Kaywa.
